Application Instructions
The following information is provided to help the prospective student successfully apply for admission to the Communication Sciences and Disorders PhD graduate program at the University of New Mexico. Although Graduate Studies strives to keep this information up-to-date, we still encourage you to visit the program's website to verify application instructions and required materials.
International students (including non-U.S. citizens on a visa) generally must complete additional steps, including verifying English proficiency, to apply to a graduate program at UNM. Please see the Global Education Office's International Admissions website for more information.

Educational Background | Master’s degree is required; minimum GPA = 3.50. Master’s degree may be in any discipline. Unofficial transcripts must be uploaded to the online application. Include both bachelor and master’s level transcripts. Official transcripts must be sent to the UNM Office of Admissions. |

Test Scores | Completion of the GRE is required (no minimum scores required). An English proficiency test is required for international applications (TOEFL). See the International Admissions website for additional information. |
Letter of Intent | Use the UNM PhD in CSD Letter of Intent Instructions to complete your letter of intent. Upload your letter of intent as part of your application. These instructions on the Graduate Studies website may also be useful for you. |
Writing Sample | PhD applicants must submit a professional writing sample. Instructions are located here and here. |
CV/Resume | PhD applicants must submit a CV/resume that contains the students prior educational and relevant work experiences as well as descriptions of other relevant academic experiences or products (e.g., teaching experiences such as guest lectures, conference presentations, publications). |
Relevant Coursework | Students who do not have a master’s degree in speech-language pathology or whose degree is greater than 7 years old may be required to complete additional coursework, including SHS 302 (Introduction to Communicative Disorders), SHS 506 (Reading and Writing in Research) and other SHS masters’ courses determined by their committee. |
Assistantship Interest | To be considered for ANY form of departmental financial aid, applicants must complete and upload the SHS department's PhD financial aid form and complete a FAFSA. Additional information is located here. |
Recommendations | Three letters of recommendation are required, all of which must be submitted through the online application system. Letters should reflect the student’s past research and academic experiences, especially as they relate to the completion of a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders. |
