About Graduate Studies
As the central graduate academic administrative unit at the University of New Mexico, Graduate Studies is committed to helping students succeed. Our staff are always eager to assist students, and we often collaborate with UNM administrators, faculty, graduate students, and staff in implementing many programs and services, including:
Student Support
- Coordinates with graduate student organizations-such as GPSA, PNMGC, and others to ensure that graduate students have a voice in the services we provide to programs and students.
- Provides administrative and/or financial support for the Graduate Resource Center (GRC), the Project for the New Mexico Graduates of Color (PNMGC), the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA), and the Graduate Teaching Academy, and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
- Provides guidance to students for degree progress, fulfillment of graduation requirements, and theses and dissertation submissions.
- Rewards graduate students and graduate faculty who set examples of excellence.
- Works to diversify access to graduate education.
- Reviews programs of studies and applications for candidacy.
- Maintains graduate students’ academic records.
Financial Support
- Administers financial support in the form of fellowships, scholarships, grants and awards.
- Collaborates with Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) to manage health care insurance for graduate students.
Program Support
- Provides broad oversight of program quality and encourages best practices in graduate education.
- Manages academic policies.
- Holds monthly meetings with graduate advisers from all graduate programs and departments to share information and ideas, streamline processes and procedures, and keep the UNM graduate community informed about deadlines for scholarships and fellowships.
- Does not process graduate applications but works collaboratively with Enrollment Management (which includes Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Registrar) and with departments during the admission process.
We encourage you to bring concerns or questions directly to us or to work with your advisors, departments, and student organizations to bring them to our attention. While your department’s graduate advisor is your frontline resource, Graduate Studies staff members are always happy to help you.
