The following information is provided to help the prospective student successfully apply for admission to the Counselor Education PhD graduate program at the University of New Mexico. Although Graduate Studies strives to keep this information up-to-date, we still encourage you to visit the program's website to verify application instructions and required materials.

Educational Background | Students generally enter the PhD program having earned a master’s degree in counseling, developed their counseling skills, and attained licensure as a professional counselor. The basic UNM requirements for domestic

Test Scores | The Counselor Education PhD application no longer requires a GRE score to be submitted. |
Letter of Intent | Students must submit a personal statement articulating their interest and fit within the program, their interest in the profession of counselor education, and fit and interest working with faculty within the program. Additionally students should share about their multicultural competence within their academic and professional background and share their career goals. |
CV/Resume | Students must submit a current CV/Resume. |
Writing Sample | Students must submit a writing sample (optional): Applicants are encouraged to include a research publication or a term paper. |
Recommendations | Students must submit at least 3 professional reference letters noting the students aptitude for doctoral program, fit with the profession, communication skills, potential for scholarship and teaching, emotional stability, motivation, and self-awareness. |
