Application Materials and Instructions

Students generally enter the PhD program having earned a master’s degree in counseling, developed their counseling skills, and attained licensure as a professional counselor. The basic UNM requirements for domestic
applicants follow. Applicants who do not qualify as “domestic applicants” should consult the Graduate Studies website for additional requirements.

1. Must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or its equivalent in another country.

2. Must hold a master’s degree in counseling from an accredited college or university in the United States or its equivalent in another country. The master’s degree in counseling should be from a CACREP-accredited masters program. Students without a CACREP-accredited masters degree need the following coursework and experiences in their graduate training.
• Professional counseling orientation and ethical practice
• Social and cultural diversity
• Human growth and development
• Career development
• Counseling and helping relationships
• Group counseling and group work
• Assessment and testing
• Research and evaluation
• Practical and/or internships in counseling totaling to a minimum of 280 direct hours and 420 indirect hours.
• Course work in one of the following: Clinical mental health counseling, school
counseling, addictions counseling, career counseling, clinical rehabilitation counseling, college counseling and student affairs, marriage/couple/family counseling, rehabilitation counseling.
