Application Instructions
The following information is provided to help the prospective student successfully apply for admission to the Geography (PhD) graduate program at the University of New Mexico, which is offered as a joint venture with the Department of Geography and New Mexico State University. Although Graduate Studies strives to keep this information up-to-date, we still encourage you to visit the program's website to verify application instructions and required materials.

Test Scores | The Department does not have minimum requirements for GPA and no longer requires GRE scores. Applicants for whom English is not a native language need to provide current English proficiency test scores (such as TOEFL, IELTS, or other). See guidelines from the UNM Global Education Office. |
Letter of Intent | A letter of intent is required. This letter, usually 2-3 pages long, should briefly describe:

Writing Sample | One writing sample is required; up to two samples may be submitted. Your writing sample can be a published work, an unpublished report, a school or work assignment, a master’s thesis, or some other piece of writing that shows your capabilities in written communication about scholarly, technical, or professional topics. Personal, fictional, or creative writing should not be submitted. |
CV/Resume | A current resume, documenting your academic and professional accomplishments, is required. |
Assistantship Interest | Optional. If you wish to seek a graduate assistantship or other form of financial assistance from the UNM Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, provide a statement that describes your qualifications relevant to serving as either a Teaching Assistant or a Research Assistant. |
Recommendations | Three letters of recommendation are required. At least two of these letters must come from academic contacts, such as a college professor, or a research director in a laboratory or business. |
