Application Instructions
The following information is provided to help the prospective student successfully apply for admission to the Latin American Studies (PhD) graduate program at the University of New Mexico. Although Graduate Studies strives to keep this information up-to-date, we still encourage you to visit the program's website to verify application deadlines, instructions, and required materials.
Please note: These instructions are for PhD applications only; MA application instructions are available here.
International students (including non-U.S. citizens on a visa) generally must complete additional steps to apply to a graduate program at UNM. Please see the Global Education Office's International Admissions website for more information.

Educational Background | Applicants must upload unofficial transcripts or their application will be considered incomplete. Official transcripts must also be sent directly to the UNM Office of Admissions. |
Program of Interest | Select > College of Arts and Sciences > Latin American and Iberian Institute > Latin American Studies > PhD Latin American Studies. Please also select two intended area of concentration. |
Test Scores | International students must complete the TOEFL exam and submit translated and authenticated transcripts to International Admissions at the Global Education Office. |
Letter of Intent | Required. Please see the program website for complete instructions. |
Writing Sample | A writing sample of approximately 15-25 pages in length. The sample may be a previously submitted term paper or an original essay, but should represent recent work. This requirement provides the applicant with the opportunity to demonstrate research and analytical abilities, as well as capacity to work across disciplines. It may be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese. |
CV/Resume | A current CV or resume is required. |
Recommendations | Three letters of recommendation from academic references that address the applicant's past academic performance including analytical abilities, language proficiency, and potential for success in graduate studies. If an applicant requests a letter from a professional reference, the letter should address analytical abilities and professional qualifications relevant to Latin American area studies. Letters may be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese. |
Additional Requirements | Applicants are required to possess a master's degree in one of the chosen concentrations available to Latin American Studies doctoral students or a master’s degree in Latin American Studies with appropriate course work. Specific entrance requirements may vary depending on the student's intended concentrations and admitted students may be required to make up pre-requisites or deficiencies with courses that do not count toward the credit hours required for the PhD. |
