Application Instructions
The following information is provided to help the prospective student successfully apply for admission to the Linguistics graduate program at the University of New Mexico. Although Graduate Studies strives to keep this information up-to-date, we still encourage you to visit the program's website to verify application deadlines, instructions, and required materials.
International students (including non-U.S. citizens on a visa) generally must complete additional steps to apply to a graduate program at UNM. Please see the Global Education Office's International Admissions website for more information.

Fall Admission Master's Program | For financial aid consideration: December 15th Best consideration without financial aid: March 31st |
Spring Admission Master's Program (No Financial Aid) | Best consideration (international students): August 1st Best consideration (domestic students): October 31st |
International students should apply well before these dates to allow time for admissions and visa processing. |

Letter of Intent | Please describe why you are interested in linguistics, why you would like to study at UNM and (for PhD applicants) what research area you plan to pursue |
Writing Sample | For PhD applicants only: sample of linguistic analysis (term paper, MA thesis or thesis chapter, academic publication). |
Assistantship Interest | Please state whether you are interested in a teaching assistantship and if so, describe your relevant skills and experience, such as knowledge of a language or experience teaching writing. |
Recommendations | Three (3) online recommendations, all from persons familiar with your academic performance, are required. Recommenders should evaluate applicants in the categories given on the online form, and are encouraged to upload a letter of recommendation in addition to the online form. |
