Application Instructions
The following information is provided to help the prospective student successfully apply for admission to the Political Science MA and PhD graduate programs at the University of New Mexico. Although Graduate Studies strives to keep this information up-to-date, we still encourage you to visit the program's website to verify application deadlines, instructions, and required materials.
International students (including non-U.S. citizens on a visa) generally must complete additional steps to apply to a graduate program at UNM and demonstrate English proficiency. Please see the Global Education Office's International Admissions website for more information.
Application Deadlines | |
Fall Admission | Completed applications received by January 15th will receive priority consideration for financial aid. After January 15th, applications will be considered on a rolling basis, through May 1st. |

Educational Background | Please upload unofficial transcripts from each academic institution attended. Official transcripts must also be sent directly to the university. |
Program of Interest | Select: College of Arts and Sciences > Political Science > At least one area of interest must be selected |
Test Scores | The GRE requirement is waived for Fall 2023 and Fall 2024 applications. |
Letter of Intent | A short (1-2 page) letter of intent describing your interest in the study of political science at UNM is required. |
Writing Sample | A writing sample (preferably a research paper) illustrating analytical ability and stylistic mastery is required. |
CV/Resume | Optional. No special instructions. |
Recommendations | Three letters of recommendation, preferably from former instructors, are required. |
