Graduate Transfer Credit
Submit form to grad@unm.edu with the subject: Graduate Transfer Credit Form for [Student Name]
Graduate Transfer Credit Pre-Approval Process
The Transfer Credit Form is available for advance evaluation of graduate transfer credit eligibility prior to submission of degree completion forms. Completion of this Transfer Credit form is strongly recommended for all students considering application of transfer credits toward UNM program requirements, including use for any elective hours. Submission of this form early in the program requirement planning process will allow students and their advisors to make informed enrollment planning decisions. It can also help prevent transfer credit issues when submitting the Program of Studies (POS) or Application for Candidacy (AC) and the potential need for additional, unplanned graduate coursework hours at UNM.
Please note that the completion of this form does not approve the use of transfer credits towards a student’s program. This only evaluates graduate transfer credit eligibility.
For more information about graduate transfer credit policies, including minimum requirements for transfer, see the Applying Credits Toward Your Degree page and UNM’s Graduate Policies. Students must also consult their faculty and program advisors, as programs may set stricter limits on transfer credit application to program requirements. Programs will also determine whether courses may be listed on a POS or AC, regardless of eligibility pre-approval from Graduate Studies via this form.
Submission Instructions:
1. Complete all form fields, making sure that transfer course details match their exact information from the official transcript from the other institution (please use the exact subject codes, abbreviations and titles that match the transcript). Leave the UNM credit equivalency column blank. Graduate Studies will review credit conversions and complete this field for each course.
2. Obtain faculty advisor and department signatures except for the Graduate Studies staff signature.
3. Send the completed form to grad@unm.edu with the subject: Graduate Transfer Credit Form for [Student Name].
4. Monitor your email for any communications from Graduate Studies staff about the form.
Additional Details about this Pre-Approval Process:
- If a student is planning to transfer credits from more than one institution, submit one form for each institution. Do not put more than one institution’s credits on one form.
- UNM credits taken in graduate or non-degree graduate status are institutional credits and should not be submitted on the Transfer Credit Form.
- Not all schools are on the U.S. semester credit system, and Graduate Studies staff will determine correct credit conversions if the credit system differs.
- Not all schools use the same letter grade system as most U.S. schools. If the transfer institution uses a different grading system, Graduate Studies staff will determine the correct letter grade conversion.
- Pre-approval of transfer credits on this form only confirms their eligibility for graduate transfer credit. Upon approval of this form, please note that transfer credits will not be transcribed and are not confirmed for specific use towards a student’s program.
- For graduate credit transcription and use toward program requirements, final transfer credits must be listed on the Program of Studies (POS) or Application for Candidacy (AC). Transfer courses will receive final approval and be submitted for transcription when the POS or AC receives full approval from Graduate Studies.
- All transfer and applied credit policies in the UNM catalog apply to graduate programs. Please consult both UNM graduate policies and program policies for transfer credit eligibility. Programs may set stricter transfer credit application limits than those established in Graduate Studies policies.
- Courses, including transfer courses, may only be used toward a maximum of two programs. For example, a student transferring courses from a Graduate Certificate at another school could not use those transfer credits toward a master’s degree and a doctoral degree at UNM. They are only eligible for application to two programs in total.
Any questions about the Transfer Credit Form may be sent to grad@unm.edu. Please include the student’s degree program in any inquiries.
