Application Fee Waiver Request
The University’s graduate application fee may be waived for domestic applicants who are affiliated with the following programs: the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC), McNair Scholars, Project 1000, Post Baccalaureate Research and Education Programs (PREP), GEM Fellowship Program, and Initiatives for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD). In order to receive the waiver, applicants must submit a signed letter of support from the program director along with the completed form.
The graduate application fee may also be waived in limited cases of financial hardship. In order to apply for the fee waiver, you must submit the same form and at least one of the following:
- A copy of the waiver granted by the testing service for the GRE fee within the past year, OR
- An official statement of need signed by a financial aid officer at the college or university you are now attending, including the most recent year’s Estimated Student or Family Contribution, OR
- Official verification of current participation in a government aid program based on low income
(Note: A one-to-two paragraph statement giving a detailed reason for your request must also be included for fee waiver requests in cases of financial hardship.)
Fee waiver requests must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the program’s application deadline date, in order to provide sufficient time to evaluate the application and determine eligibility. The program to which you are applying may require additional fees, which are not covered by this policy. Waivers are not available to international applicants.
Fill out the top section of the Application Fee Waiver Request Form, and append at least one of the documents listed on the form. (Note: application fee waiver requests will not be considered without the required documentation.)
Submit the Application Fee Waiver Request Form and attached documentation directly to the graduate department/unit to which you are applying. (Note: do not submit forms directly to GS without the “Program Recommendation” section filled out by your department. Incomplete forms received at GS will be forwarded to the appropriate graduate unit/department for review, delaying approval.)
The graduate unit/department completes the “Program Recommendation” section of the Application Fee Waiver Request Form clearly indicating their decision. After the form is signed it must be sent to Graduate Studies. Final approval for the requested deferral is made by the Dean of Graduate Studies.
The applicant, graduate unit/department, and Office of Admissions will be notified of the final decision.
