Position Summary
Graduate Studies at the University of New Mexico is conducting an internal competitive search to fill the position of Associate Dean. The successful candidate will work closely with graduate students, the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Graduate Studies staff, and other faculty and staff leaders. This position offers the opportunity to serve the university as part of an innovative team focused on new initiatives in graduate education and provides valuable professional development. The 1.0 FTE Associate Dean position includes Special Administrative Compensation, summer administrative compensation, and teaching release funds that will be provided directly to the home department.
Graduate Studies is the central academic administrative unit for graduate education at the University of New Mexico. We work in partnership with academic and administrative units across campus to promote the quality of our graduate programs, enhance student success, attract qualified applicants, and ensure broad access to graduate education. Graduate Studies provides a variety of student support services, financial assistance, and program support for graduate programs across the university.
Duties
The Associate Dean is responsible for leading initiatives and developing services that promote successful student outcomes across UNM’s graduate and professional programs. Key duties include:
- Developing and coordinating initiatives that support the professional development and academic success of graduate and professional students
- Leading the administration of annual competitions for graduate scholarships and awards
- Leading the implementation of mentorship and professional development programs
- Supporting graduate programs in learning and implementing best practices in graduate recruitment, admissions, enrollment management, retention/completion, assessment, and other student-oriented activities
- Acting as a liaison to individual graduate programs on student-related policy matters
- Acting as a liaison to the Office of Assessment and APR in the evaluation of graduate programs and their student outcomes
- Other duties as assigned
The Associate Dean is a key member of the Graduate Studies leadership team. General responsibilities include:
- Serving on the Graduate Studies Council and designated University committees.
- Promoting collaboration and coordination between Graduate Studies and student-support units across campus.
- Contributing to grant writing efforts that support graduate students and programs.
- Assisting the Graduate Dean as needed and serving as acting Graduate Dean in the Dean’s absence.
Qualifications
Tenured faculty appointment in one of UNM’s colleges or schools. Rank of professor, or associate professor currently under review for promotion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Administrative experience at the departmental or college level, with responsibility for graduate programs or issues.
- Demonstrated commitment to the academic and personal success of students at UNM.
- Demonstrated ability to work productively with a variety of stakeholders.
- Experience with the Faculty Handbook and Administrative Policies Manual.
- Interest in, or ability to learn about, emerging strategies and best practices for graduate education.
