International
UNM welcomes and supports international students throughout their academic journey. The Global Education Office (GEO) and the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) are here to support all international students who are studying, researching, and teaching at UNM on temporary non-immigrant visas. They assist students from before they arrive to campus to graduation, providing guidance and assistance with submitting application materials, understanding immigration rules, maintaining work requirements, observing travel regulations, finding housing, navigating university systems, and handling the academic, social, and emotional challenges of studying far from home.

Cost of Attendance and Graduate Scholarships
UNM offers competitive scholarships for high-achieving international students. Our most prestigious scholarship, the International Amigo Scholarship, grants international students (non-immigrant visa holders) the resident, in-state tuition rate. This means you will pay what a resident student from New Mexico pays. This is a value of over $15,000 per year! All applicants are automatically considered for these generous scholarships – no additional application paperwork is needed!
Social and Cultural Support
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS)
Comprehensive support services include arrival and housing information, orientation, visa support, health care and insurance resources, immigration and travel guidance, tax assistance, work rules and authorization, workshops, and cultural events.
Lobo Friends International Peer Mentoring Program
Matches incoming international students with current UNM students to support them through their first year at UNM. Focuses on getting to know UNM, Albuquerque, and the Southwest, adjusting to U.S. life and academics, and socializing.
Academic Support
JumpStart Orientation
The Center for Teaching and Learning hosts a JumpStart orientation for new students each semester, where incoming students can meet one another, learn about resources on campus, and hear from a panel of current students. This is a great point of entry for new international graduate students.
Cohort programs
Cohort programs are ideally suited to supporting the specific needs of international students. Graduate Community Mentoring (GCM), the Project for New Mexico Graduates of Color peer mentorship program (PNMGC), the Zancada Graduate Fellows Program, and Summa Academia offer students community, resources, and programming to guide them in navigating the graduate experience.
Graduate Support at the Center for Teaching and Learning
Offers free one-on-one consultations in writing, ESOL, statistics, career support, and thesis/dissertation coaching, as well as workshops, writing camps, and support groups.
Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA)
Home of graduate and professional student governance at UNM. Administers grants and scholarships, student organization funding, and lobbies NM Legislature to support graduate and professional student needs.
Accessibility Resource Center (ARC)
Provides accommodations and resources to students with disabilities.
Personalized journeys
Who you are and what you value will determine the kind of thoroughfares and waystations you visit along your graduate journey. At UNM Graduate Studies, we are committed to helping you forge a path that best serves you.
