Community Centered

Graduate and professional school is challenging without a supportive community to lean on. We are committed to bringing together students who share similar life experiences and values, and to providing them with the resources, programming, and fellowship they seek. Our goal is to foster community-oriented support networks that allow students to flourish and feel seen. UNM offers cohort programs that mentor graduate students through degree completion and professionalization, as well as a variety of services, groups, and events that celebrate who you are and where you come from.

Come find your community at UNM.

Cohort programs

Cohort programs create small communities of graduate students for mutual learning and support.

  • Graduate Community Mentoring (GCM) is an initiative of Graduate Studies that supports graduate and professional students and faculty in building strong mentoring relationships, navigating academia, and fostering professional growth.
  • The Project for New Mexico Graduates of Color (PNMGC) is a student-led peer mentorship program working to retain graduate students of color through providing academic, social, cultural, and emotional support.
  • Summa Academia supports underrepresented graduate students by promoting academic success and professional development under the guidance of experienced faculty and professionals at UNM.
  • The Glenda Lewis Critical Race Scholars Program supports a cohort of graduate students conducting research on topics related to critical race scholarship.
  • The Zancada Fellows Program – zancada is a Spanish word for stride — provides research support and professional development in a cohort setting.
