Application Instructions
The following information is provided to help the prospective student successfully apply for admission to the Secondary Education Graduate Certificate with 7-12 Licensure program at the University of New Mexico. Although Graduate Studies strives to keep this information up-to-date, we still encourage you to visit the program's website to verify application instructions and required materials.
International students (including non-U.S. citizens on a visa) generally must complete additional steps to apply to a graduate program at UNM. Please see the Global Education Office's International Admissions website for more information.
Fall Admission | Best consideration July 1st. Last day to apply is August 1st. |
Spring Admission | Best consideration is November 15th. Last day to apply is December 1st. |
Summer Admission: | Best consideration April 15th. Last day to apply is May 15th. |

Letter of Intent | In your Letter of Intent (1-page maximum), you should share your experiences that have led you to become a teacher, your philosophy of education, and characteristics you possess to be an excellent teacher of students in a Middle School or High School setting (Grades 7-12). Be sure to include your experiences working with and teaching children ages 11-18, your experiences in multicultural/diverse settings, and your experience with or openness to working with students with special needs. Transcript Review for Content Area Requirements | As part of your application, you will be required to submit a Transcript Review for Content area. In order to complete this, please contact the Graduate Licensure Coordinator ( secedgradlicensure@unm.edu) and request a transcript review to ensure you meet content requirements (24 credit hours in chosen content area/12 credits which must be upper division 300+). This process will require you to send a copy of your unofficial transcript(s) and to indicate the subject area you are seeking NMPED Licensure to the Graduate Licensure Coordinator for reviewal (secedgradlicensure@unm.edu). Please ensure you submit all unofficial transcripts from any Institution previously attended. The Graduate Licensure Coordinator will then get this form back to you so that you may attach it onto your application. Please keep in mind this is a part of your application. Applications will be considered incomplete if no Transcript Review is uploaded |
Recommendations | Provide the names and emails of a minimum of two (2) people to supply a reference for you. The UNM system will email these people and request a review of your potential success as a teacher and a letter of recommendation. YOU MUST HAVE a minimum of one PROFESSIONAL REFERENCE AND a minimum of one ACADEMIC REFERENCE. You DO NOT upload these letters of recommendation. You provide accurate email information and as stated above, the UNM system will email these persons. Inform your references they will receive an automated email from UNM. Their prompt response ensures a prompt review of your application. Alert your references that this email will be automatically sent from UNM as soon as you submit your application. Each reference should check Junk and Spam folders if this email is not in their Inbox. |
